What the project is all about:
The Main Street Phase 2 revitalization project aims to re-energize the historic heart of Tofino. As a settlement originally accessible only by water, Tofino grew inland from the water, for decades Main Street was the centre of commerce with docks, a post office, stores, a school, a hotel and beautiful homesteads. With the construction of a paved road in the early 1970’s much of the commercial and civic emphasis moved one block inland to Campbell Street. Today, three parallel blocks of Main and Campbell Streets form the core of Tofino’s downtown.
The Main Street revitalization project is based on the vision defined in Tofino’s 2011 Vitalization Plan for “a highly walkable, bikeable, accessible, and inclusive downtown, focusing on a blend of uses including commercial, residential, civic, and arts and culture, while capitalizing on its historic working relationship to the water and the waterfront.”

Constructed works will focus on improved pedestrian safety through the provision of ample space for pedestrian connections and areas on both north and south sides of the street; reduced visual and physical impact of parking while maintaining parking availability; improved foot traffic to local businesses by maximizing the positive relationship between buildings and the public realm; stimulated investment in existing commercial properties through increased traffic along commercial frontages, and reinforced and celebrated views of the waterfront, ocean and mountains;
In keeping with the overall vision for Tofino’s downtown, Main Street improvements will include walkways, benches and landscaping features designed to encourage residents and visitors to explore downtown Tofino from a new perspective—absorbing the local history, enjoying amazing views and being introduced to different restaurants, boutiques and other businesses.
In addition to a $117,993 funding contribution from the Island Coastal Economic Trust, the District will utilize Provincial Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) funds and Federal Gas Tax Reserve funds for a total project budget of $550,000
