Other Emergency Preparedness Stories

TOFINO, B.C. - BC Hydro crews are working hard to provide power to the Tofino Hospital and Tofino Long Beach Airport today. Some areas south of Lynn Rd do have power. Crews are diligently working on getting the rest of the community back online either today or tomorrow, however priority is the Tofino Hospital and Tofino Long Beach Airport at this time.

The District of Tofino encourages community members in Tofino who are still affected by the outage to begin preparing for another 24 hrs without electricity. If you are with power, please consider opening up your home to friends and family without power to share the warmth.

PreparedBC has some great resources to help you and your family prepare for an emergency.  Visit PreparedBC here:

Residents and visitors are being encouraged to proactively conserve water use during this time.  This will help ease the pump stations that are currently being operated by generators.

As of 4:30 AM PST on Saturday, December 22, 2018 Weather Canada has issued a wind warning in effect for West Vancouver Island.  Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.  A strong Pacific frontal system will approach Vancouver Island this afternoon.  Southeast winds 40 to 60km/hr are expected to develop over exposed coastal sections of west Vancouver Island late today.  Winds are expected to ease below warning criteria Saturday evening.  Residents and visitors are urged to stay indoors and travel if only necessary. Trees may have been compromised by the wind on Thursday and Friday and are prone to additional wind damage. Please take notice and be aware of damaged trees as the day progresses. Stay at least 10 metres away from downed powerlines.

We want to acknowledge the hard work that the District of Tofino Public Works Department and BC Hydro crews have put in over the past 48 hrs.  We are all very grateful for the outstanding job you are all doing.
