DISTRICT OF TOFINO – OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
For immediate release
June 14, 2017
Today the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada released Investigation Report M15P0347 into the capsizing of the Leviathan II on October 25, 2015. The release of this report is an important step in the on-going recovery from this tragedy, as it helps Tofino’s whale-watching companies, other passenger vessel operators, and the community-at-large understand the events leading up to the capsizing and what should be done to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The attention and thoroughness applied by the Transportation Safety Board to this incident provides a great deal of comfort, and we look forward to seeing how Transport Canada will work to implement the recommendations made by the TSB.
Today, we are all thinking of all those affected by the tragedy, especially the victims, survivors, their families and our community. We hope this report helps them in their recovery. We are also reminded of the incredible professionalism and care demonstrated by first responders, including the whale watching fleet and First Nations, and community members during those difficult minutes, hours and days following the capsizing.
