TOFINO RECEIVES BC RURAL DIVIDEND FUNDING
TOFINO B.C. – The District of Tofino is pleased to announce is has been successful in its bid for $10,000 from the BC Rural Dividend, for the Tofino Sustainable Event Co-op.
The Tofino Sustainable Event Co-op will provide supplies, bulk discounts and trained support staff to aid event producers in the delivery of low-waste, 'green' events. Cost savings through bulk purchasing and shared equipment will enable greater profits for event producers, attracting more events to the region. Special attention will be paid to purchasing from local suppliers, composting food waste and eliminating the use of plastic. The events themselves support the local economy, enhance quality of life for residents, and attract new residents and visitors.
Funding from the Rural Dividend Program will support a business plan for the creation of the Co-op. Including preliminary networks between events, research into bulk purchasing, shared equipment and supplies and the development of waste management systems.
Tofino's Sustainable Community Action Plan, Tourism Master Plan and Event Strategy all prioritize growing Tofino's economy through events and set a goal for Tofino to become a leader in sustainable 'green' event practices. Tofino's Event Strategy recommended the development of the Tofino Sustainable Event Co-op to support the District and event producers as they reach this goal.
The BC Rural Dividend Program assists rural communities in diversifying their economies and building and retaining their workforce. Funded projects will help to meet the unique vision and needs of each individual community and will support the development of strong future applications to the Program.
