Formal Request vs. Informal Request

A formal written request is only necessary if the information you seek is not routinely available. Check the list above for the type of information you're looking for to determine whether a formal request is required. 

When making a formal request, please make your request as specific as possible to reduce processing time and possible service fees. You may use this Request Form or submit a letter to the Corporate Services Department by:

Consent to Disclosure

A Consent to Disclosure Form serves as consent by the applicant to disclose information, including the applicants personal information, to another individual who the applicant authorizes as his or her agent in relation to a request for review or complaint.

General Information

The District of Tofino is subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the Act).  The Act ensures that public bodies are accountable and open to the public.  This is accomplished through the balance of the public's right to:

  • Freedom of Information - The public has the right to access government records
  • Protection of Privacy - Individuals have the right to privacy by prohibiting the unauthorized collection, use or disclosure of their personal information 

The Act requires the District to respond to your request within 30 business days of receipt. Please note, if your request is complex, the Act permits the District to extend this time.


There is no charge for your own personal information. Depending on whether your request is informal or through the FOI process, different fees may apply.
