Mayor Josie Osborne to Seek the BC NDP Nomination for Mid Island-Pacific Rim

Municipal Services and Priorities Will Continue Throughout the Process

TOFINO, B.C. – On Monday, September 14, 2020, B.C. NDP MLA Scott Fraser announced that he will not be seeking reelection for the Mid Island-Pacific Rim seat. Formerly Tofino’s Mayor, Scott Fraser has served our community as MLA for fifteen years. On Tuesday, Mayor Josie Osborne announced that she is seeking the NDP nomination for the riding in the next provincial election.

These announcements do not change Mayor Osborne’s status as Tofino’s Mayor. If successful in gaining the NDP nomination, the Mayor has indicated that she will take a leave of absence once a provincial election is called. A municipal by-election would be triggered if Mayor Osborne chooses to vacate her Office - Council would appoint a chief election officer and a by-election must take place within 80 days.

Tofino’s Meeting Procedure Bylaw provides for each member of Council to serve as Acting Mayor on a rotating, monthly basis when the Mayor is absent or otherwise unable to act, or when the Office of the Mayor is vacant. Alternatively, Council may designate one Councillor to serve as Acting Mayor until such time as a person is elected or otherwise appointed as Mayor.

Council and staff are committed to the continuity of municipal services, and District priorities and projects will continue as planned regardless of these recent announcements or any resulting elections. We encourage the public to stay informed through the District of Tofino’s regular communication channels on social media, the District website and email subscription list.
