TOFINO, B.C. – The District of Tofino will be implementing beach pay parking this year to address long-standing parking and traffic challenges faced annually at Tofino's beach locations.

The planned implementation of pay parking will begin in early August at various zones, including Cox Bay at Maltby Road, public parking adjacent to Long Beach Lodge/Cox Bay Beach Resort, South Chesterman parking lot, Chesterman Beach Road, Lynn Road, North Chesterman parking lot, Osprey Lane, Thornberg Crescent, Hellesen Drive and Tonquin Park Road.

Fraser Work, Director of Infrastructure & Public Works
"We have heard clearly from our residents, visitors and business community about the increasing struggle to access our public beach locations" said Fraser Work. "We are confident this parking model will ensure a healthier turnover of parking spaces to allow more people shared enjoyment and convenient access to our beaches.”

Beach pay parking will be in effect between 8 am and 11 pm and will be enforced by dedicated parking ambassadors seven days a week. Robbins Parking Services Ltd has been selected as the service provider through a competitive process earlier in 2021. Overnight parking in all beach pay parking zones will be prohibited, without special permit. Tickets will be issued for parking infractions.

Beach Pay Parking Permits
• Annual passes in 2021 are $120*
• Day passes are $12.
• Hourly parking costs $3 for the first two hours and $3 each hour afterwards.
• Annual passes for business vehicles are $120 per vehicle per year.

*Eligible Tofino, Ahousaht, Opitsaht, Esowista, Hesquiaht and Tyhistanis residents will be able to register online for a free annual permit, while Ucluelet and other ACRD communities will receive a 50% discount on the initial annual pass. Registration for free and discounted parking permits will open in late July, ahead of the August rollout.

The final date of implementation is to be announced soon as preparations are finalized.
