TOFINO, B.C. – The District of Tofino is taking steps to reduce emissions with the pilot of an electric bus for this summer's Tofino Free Shuttle service between downtown Tofino and the Tofino Visitor Centre with stops at local beaches along the way.
The Tofino Shuttle has operated since 2009 and has been free of charge since 2014 in an effort to boost ridership and reduce parking and traffic congestion. The service is funded primarily by Tofino’s participation in the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) program with additional support from pay parking revenue and Tourism Tofino.
The Honourable Josie Osborne, M.L.A, Minister of Municipal Affairs
“Visitors come to Tofino for incredible experiences on the West Coast,” said Minister Osborne. “The Tofino free shuttle helps provide that experience, and it’s so exciting to see Tofino making it even better by running an electric bus on the route. This is good for our community, visitors and the environment.”
The shuttle service provides a much-needed alternative mode of transit for visitors and residents to help reduce emissions, traffic congestion and parking challenges faced annually at Tofino's beaches.
Tofino Mayor Dan Law
“We are encouraging visitors and residents to take advantage of this easy, stress-free way to get between major resorts, campgrounds, local beaches and the village core” said Tofino Mayor Dan Law. “ Due to COVID-19 we were unable to operate this service last year so it is even more exciting to be back with the pilot of an electric bus that will significantly reduce emissions on this route”
The pilot has been made possible by the partnership between Vancouver Island based Wilson Transportation and BYD Canada who have been instrumental in making this year’s electric bus possible.
Ted Dowling, Vice President BYD Canada
“We at BYD Canada are thrilled to be part of the Zero Emissions shuttle bus for Tofino. Residents and tourists deserve to ride on a clean, quiet bus to and from their destination. We are proud to be part of Tofino and Ucluelet‘s exploration of public transit options to support their communities.”
John Wilson, President and CEO Wilson Transportation
“The Wilson’s Group is committed to doing our part towards a sustainable future. We are honored to be a part of this pilot project and to be working alongside such great and innovative partners.”
This year's shuttle began on June 28 and will run until mid-September providing an hourly and half-hour services. The shuttle is free of charge for all riders, who can hop on and off at various beach and resort stops between downtown Tofino and Cox Bay, with their surfboards and beach gear.
Schedule information is available at https://tourismtofino.com/freeshuttle with integration and trip planning support through Google Transit (maps) launching later in July.
